Epilepsy Awareness Training for Schools

Young Epilepsy can provide training for teachers on supporting students with epilepsy and their families.

The Children and Families Act means significant changes are being made across special educational and mainstream schools. There is a lot to prepare for, and the statutory guidance on ‘Supporting Pupils at School with Medical Conditions’ will mean that education staff will be required to be trained specifically to support pupils with health conditions. Epilepsy affects 1 in 103 people in the UK and new research shows that over half of children with epilepsy underachieve at school.

Young Epilepsy, the national charity supporting children and young people with epilepsy in the UK, can deliver a 1 hour epilepsy awareness and basic seizure management session with your staff at the reduced rate of £250.

Staff will receive information on how to recognise different types of seizures, their management and the impact that epilepsy can have on learning and behaviour. Even children with well controlled epilepsy often need specific educational support and we can give you practical strategies to help you support these children in achieving their full potential at school.

We will also tell you how you can refer onto your Regional Connect Worker who can offer 1:1 social and emotional support to students with epilepsy and their families. This is a free service funded by the Big Lottery.

Lessons and assemblies are interactive, thought provoking and designed to raise epilepsy awareness, dispel common myths, tackle stigma and promote understanding and empathy amongst peers.
