Author Talk - Suffragettes of Kent

Looking for a speaker for your students about the local suffrage movement?

Kent author, Jennifer Godfrey, can provide your students with a talk about her research and book, Suffragettes of Kent. It includes details of a story not previously told, of Ethel, a Kent working-class housemaid, arrested for her part in the 1912 WSPU window smashing. Students can learn about the trails of many caravan tours and pilgrimages of the county undertaken by different suffrage societies. Jennifer can cover the 1866 first mass votes for women petition and the Kent signatories; suffragette prisoners' forcible feeding in Maidstone and Canterbury prisons; and other stories of hope, determination and sacrifice.

Schools that Jennifer has already visited have provided glowing feedback:

"Thank you for coming in today. The boys found the talk very informative and interesting and we look forward to reading your book."

"Thank you so much for coming to see and speak to us today. I had some lovely feedback from the Year 9s who said they weren't sure what to expect but they hadn't expected it to be as good as it was. We further discussed the significance of the forcible feeding and how it had only been previously reserved for mental health hospitals. The copies of your book are already in circulation."
