Consumer education

A new free toolkit to give young people essential life skills, including consumer knowledge, from Kent Trading Standards.

Historically the interest and number of entries from Kent schools to Young Consumer Of the Year (YCOY) has been high but numbers of students involved has dropped and we need to question whether it still represents value for money.

With this in mind, we have developed a new toolkit to give young people essential life skills, including consumer knowledge. There are nine modules covering subjects on consumer rights, doorstep crime, scams, fire safety, who can help, food & hygiene, road safety, legal age and e-safety/social media.

Teachers are provided with online teacher's notes, quiz, answer sheet for students, teacher score sheet and a printable certificate of achievement - to be able to teach Life Skills as part of the PSHE curriculum.

We plan to develop and update the toolkit to reflect the ever changing education needs of young people and teachers.

Depending on the interest, schools that have completed the modules may have the opportunity to enter a team of 4 students into a Kent consumer quiz competition. The competition is not the primary aim of the education activity. You can register your interest by emailing sandra.cook@kent.gov.uk and you will be notified of the details at a later date.

Access the modules here and as a valued supporter of YCOY, we would appreciate your feedback by answering a few questions.

  1. Would you use the Life Skills toolkit in your school?
  2. At what age group/year would you aim it?
  3. What would you change about the resource?
  4. What other subjects would you like to be added?
  5. Would you be interested in a competition, for users of the toolkit?
  6. Any other suggestions?

Please email your answers to Sandra Cook - thank you.
