100 schools set to champion green travel

Applications are coming thick and fast for an award-winning green travel initiative, and there is still time for more schools to sign up.

So far, 100 schools have joined the KM Walk to School campaign for the autumn term, and they will kick off their green travel activity in time for Walk to School month in October.

The campaign, run by the KM Charity Team, is a five-time winner at the Green Apple Awards an event that highlights impressive environmentally friendly practices as examples for other countries and organisations to follow.

Walk to School includes the Super Wow scheme, which encourages pupils to use active means to get to school whether it’s walking, cycling, or opting to park and stride.

In addition, participating schools will have access to Road Safety Skills Tests and the Green Champions initiative, meaning they will enjoy the benefits of three schemes for the price of one. Super Wow schools will be invited to take part in a series of walk to school challenges to win prizes that include celebrity storytelling visits and tickets to leading leisure attractions.

KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby said: “We’ve had another bumper year with Walk to School, with more than 44,000 children travelling to and from school in a way that’s good for their health and the environment.

“Our Walk to School participants have succeeded in taking nearly 240,000 car journeys off the road, and that’s good news for everybody. Healthy children arrive bright and alert for the start of the school day, there’s less risk of traffic accidents outside the school gates, and commuters spend a lot less time queuing in traffic.”

Simon added: “We’ve just passed the 100-mark for the number of schools joining us from September, and there’s still plenty of time for others to register, with a 20% discount for those who register by the end of term."
