Amelix - ‘Is It Worth It?’ school tour

School children across Kent are to receive extra lessons in online safety thanks to money from Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott.

The PCC is partly-responsible for funding community safety projects in the county. He has also committed to raising awareness of issues like sexual exploitation and abuse in order to protect young people from harm.

The Whitstable-based Amelix Group, in conjunction with Kent Police, will use a £31,335 grant from the PCC to deliver safety lessons in schools covering subjects including online grooming, sexting, cyber-bullying and trolling on social media.

Mr Scott said: ‘I saw one of the Amelix talks for myself at a school in Faversham earlier this year - and I was very impressed. Kent Police creates the content to make sure that the messages are fit-for-purpose and then Amelix uses up-and-coming music artists to help deliver the messages so young people are as engaged as possible.’

Louis Hurst, Director of Amelix, said: "We’re very proud of the way Amelix Youth Projects, in association with Kent Police, delivers difficult messages in a credible way. E-safety is an important subject to teach our young people, and it needs to be done in a sensitive and engaging way."

Mr Scott added: "The internet is a wonderful innovation but, unfortunately, some people use it to try and exploit people or cause them harm. Issues like cyber-bullying and sexting which were unheard of a generation ago are now commonplace, so it is vital we educate young people on how to protect themselves online so they can make sure they are using the internet safely.

As well as funding these talks, I’m developing a cyber-bullying survey to map when and how young people in Kent are using social media and the internet, and to better understand what can be done to make the online world safer for everyone."

Amelix is due to deliver 20 sessions in Kent’s schools in October, with another 40 sessions being scheduled for February and July. Thousands of schoolchildren will have watched the tour before the end of the 2017/18 academic year, with Kent Police and the PCC monitoring the benefits the talks have had.

  • A small number of dates in October are still available. If you are interested in having Amelix visit your school, please visit the website for more information.
