Cake Fit For A Queen

Her Majesty The Queen will be celebrating her official 90th birthday on the 12th June this year.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, Kent County Council is inviting Primary school children to take part in a cake competition, inspired by the Great British Bake Off.

Primary school children from Kent will have the opportunity to have their cake designing skills put to the test by planning and designing a single-tier, decorated iced cake (approximately 22.5 cm / 9 inch round or square) for the Queen’s 90th birthday. Each school will choose a cake design and will submit it either as a drawing, a photograph or online design, for shortlisting via email to Margaret Crabtree at queens90cake@gmail.com by Friday 13 May 2016. A description of the cake and a list of proposed ingredients should accompany the entry.

The Member Panel of Judges will carefully select 12 winning designs from all the school entries. The 12 winning schools will then be invited to bake their cake and bring it to a special event taking place at 11.00 am on Wednesday 8 June 2016 at County Hall, Maidstone. Up to four representatives from each winning school will be invited to attend this prestigious event.

The cakes will be tasted and judged by an expert panel including Lady De L’Isle, wife of the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, and Rosemary Shrager, the celebrity chef and haute cuisine teacher who has appeared in many reality television programmes including “The Real Marigold Hotel”.

All 12 finalists will receive a commemorative coin and those who are in the top three will also receive gift vouchers.

It is hoped that as many schools as possible will take part in this competition to help celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
