CBeebies star backs Buster’s Book Club

The presenter of hit television programme Mister Maker has urged Primary schools to embrace a scheme that encourages pupils to read more books.

Phil Gallagher, who is known to millions for his role as Mister Maker on the CBeebies channel, is joining the call for schools to register this term for Buster’s Book Club. The reading reward scheme taps into children’s competitive spirit to encourage home reading and helps them discover a real love of books.

Phil has played the role of Mister Maker since 2007 and since then the show has been a global hit with several live tours. The programme encourages children to unleash their creativity using arts and crafts - and Phil is just as keen for pupils to use books to fire their imaginations.

He said: “Buster’s Book Club is a fantastic way to get children excited about reading. I hope lots of schools sign up to the scheme this term so that as many pupils as possible can join in the fun. We want more parents and care givers across the county to support children’s reading at home throughout 2019.”

Pupils participating in Buster’s Book Club are set reading targets by age group and classes compete for the coveted Reading Class of the Week Trophy. Monthly inter-school competitions find the best or most improved class for each Kent district and offer prizes such as tickets to leisure attractions or storyteller visits.

Phil has visited several winning classes, including Bapchild and Tonge CE Primary School in Sittingbourne, who were treated to his reading of The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. Last year, two of the top readers at Bridge and Patrixbourne Primary School won family tickets to the live Mister Maker and the Shapes show plus a meet and greet with Phil.

Schools are urged to join this term to have Buster’s Book Club in place for the New Year. Orders received by 1 December will go into a prize draw to win 400 books.

Each year, the scheme continues to grow and last academic year participating schools collectively achieved a record eight and a half million minutes of reading at home.
