Checklist outlining Headteacher health and safety responsibilities

As head of your school, you have a legal duty to protect the health and safety of anyone on your premises.

We understand that schools have many duties to perform and finding their way through them can seem like an onerous task, particularly those relating to health and safety. In order to help and guide you through the process, KCC's Health and Safety Team have produced a checklist for Headteachers.

The checklist is a reminder of your legal duties and good practice required of your school, covering:

  • Production of your Health and Safety Policy with a model assessment to guide you;
  • Where to find health and safety guidance;
  • Carrying out your termly inspections;
  • Essential risk assessments;
  • What KCC requires of you;
  • Emergency procedures and accident reporting arrangements and;
  • Health and safety training.

Each section provides you with links to appropriate guidance and/or model documents to help you through each process. We have also provided details on other useful contacts.
