Don’t miss out on celebrity story time

There’s still time for schools to sign up for a green travel scheme offering prizes including celebrity storytime sessions.

And schools registering with the KM Charity Team’s Walk on Wednesday (Wow) initiative by 24 July will get a 20% discount.

The latest school to enjoy a Wow prize storytime session was Sussex Road Community Primary in Tonbridge. Pupils were left in stitches by Eurovision star Cheryl Baker’s reading of NJ Novak’s mad-cap The Book With No pictures.

Sign up for Wow now, and schools could enjoy celebrity visits with Mister Maker Phil Gallagher or fellow CBeebies presenter Joanna Adeyinka-Burford next term.

Wow encourages families to walk to school on Wednesdays, with classes competing each week to be awarded the Green Class of the Week Trophy.

The storytime sessions or tickets to leisure attractions such as such Leeds Castle, Planet Ice skating rink and Wildwood wildlife park are awarded to classes that come top in monthly inter-school green travel challenges.

Pupils in Sussex Road’s 1KG class secured the visit from Cheryl after they won a regional challenge.

Cheryl, who is a KM Charity Team honorary patron, congratulated them for their “brilliant job”, and said: “I have had the best time here at Sussex Road Primary School. And huge congratulations to class 1KG for being so green and walking to school so many times.”

She also reminded other schools participating in Wow that they could win similar prizes, saying: “Don’t forget to walk to school and let us know all about it.”

As of September, Wow will be rebranded as Super Wow. Participating schools will also be able to access Road Safety Skills Tests and the KM Charity Team’s Green Champions initiative, meaning they will receive three schemes for the price of one.

Full resources are provided for each participating class, and optional trophies are available that can be presented to the best performing classes at weekly assemblies.

Children who complete sufficient walks during the year are presented with certificates.
