Don’t miss out on green travel deal

Time is running out for Primary schools to get green travel campaign Super Wow in place for the new academic year in October.

Schools that do sign up can also access the KM Charity Team’s Road Safety Skills Tests and Green Champion initiative, meaning they will effectively benefit from three schemes for the price of one.

The Road Safety Skills Tests are a fun and engaging way to encourage children to become safe pedestrians, and a perfect complement to walk to school and walking bus initiatives. They are based on the Highway Code, and participating children are eligible for special certificates than can be presented at assemblies.

The Green Champion scheme aims to empower children to use their initiative and take ownership of walk to school initiatives, with previous participants creating newsletters and posters and using photo reportage to spread the green travel word.

Super Wow also provides opportunities for schools to win storytime sessions with celebrities such as Phil Gallagher, the presenter of hit CBeebies show Mister Maker.

And children who take part in walk to school challenges and competitions held throughout the year can win free entry to Kent visitor attractions such as Leeds Castle, Planet Ice skating rink and Wildwood Wildlife Park.

Schools that register with Super Wow before the last day of the summer term, 24 July, will get a 20% discount.

Super Wow encourages families to walk to and from school on Wednesdays. Children and parents do not travel as part of a formal walk to school scheme like a walking bus, they walk on their own.

Full resources for each class are supplied, along with Super Wow passport tally cards for each child.

The KM Walk to School team can provide schools with an optional trophy to be presented to the class with the largest number of walkers each week.

And children who complete sufficient walks during the year are presented with certificates.

The charity will provide schools with newsletters to send home in children’s book bags so staff can detail the success and importance of the scheme.

The scheme also includes a walk to school writing competition every term, with the winners becoming ‘Boss for a Day’ at Kent attractions, such as Leeds Castle, the Rare Breeds Centre and the Turner Contemporary.
