Don’t miss out on school science contest

Time is running out to enter the KM Charity Team’s STEM-based Bright Spark Awards.

The deadline for the competition, with a top prize of £500, is Friday June 1. Applications must be submitted by 12pm on that day.

The Bright Spark Awards are staged to help make science cool, and are a great way to nurture a love for STEM subjects among pupils. Children are encouraged to collaborate on innovative and practical projects, using cross-curricular skills in maths, IT, science and engineering.

Entrants are filmed in school demonstrating their projects, and the finalists’ videos will be shown during a Dragon’s Den-style event at Discovery Park in Sandwich in July.

The latest school to submit an application is Maidstone’s Invicta Grammar School: a three-girl team has come up with a recipe for the perfect bath bomb. Drawing on their knowledge of chemistry, the girls came up with a recipe that uses baking powder and citric acid to release carbon dioxide and ensure their bombs float in the water.

There are no age restrictions for the awards, so both Primary and Secondary schools can get involved, and there is no limit to the number of entries a school or a group of students can submit. Each entry will be judged separately.

The competition categories are innovation, investigation and invention, and the overall Bright Spark Awards champions will win a top prize of £500.
