Dramatic prize for Buster’s best bookworms

Two excited Mister Maker fans met the popular CBeebies television presenter after their class came top in a Buster’s Book Club reading competition.

Six year-olds Winter Stevens-Greenwood and Finlay Chittenden from Bridge and Patrixbourne Primary School, Canterbury struck lucky when their class clinched the top spot in the county as most improved readers.

Schools participating in Buster’s Book Club were eligible to take part in the Kent-wide challenge and encouraged pupils to meet or exceed their home reading targets on the contest date. Gold class were crowned the winners and received Revolution Skate Park tickets as reward.

They also won an extra special prize of one family ticket of up to four people to see the Mister Maker And The Shapes Live show at Margate’s Winter Gardens. The school chose Winter and Finlay from Gold class to redeem the prize and the children also met the star, Phil Gallagher, and his sidekick Ted the Bear at a meet and greet session after the show.

Simon Dolby of the KM Charity Team said: “Phil is always fantastic when meeting his fans and I am so grateful he gave time to meet our winners. His involvement with our charity is a fantastic incentive to encourage children to read more through Buster’s Book Club.”

Buster’s Book Club motivates children and families to spend more time reading for pleasure at home. Each child is given a home reading target of a set number of minutes and then takes part in a series of challenges – including inter-class and inter-school - to maintain enthusiasm and excitement for the scheme.

Pupils can choose to read to themselves, to a parent, to listen to an audiobook, or a combination of all three. A parent or guardian must sign their special bookmark to confirm the child’s reading minutes which ar

ooks, and celebrity storytime visits. Guest storytellers who have visited winning schools include Mister Maker himself Phil Gallagher, children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth, sporting star and inspirational speaker Catherine Spencer, and singer and television presenter Cheryl Baker.

The deadline for schools to join Buster’s Book Club is December 16. To find out more, or sign up, visit Buster's Book Club website
