Eco pupils win fairytale prize

Pupils who triumphed in a walk to school challenge were rewarded with a storyteller visit from star of stage and screen Ben Roddy.

Year two pupils at St Thomas’ Catholic Primary in Canterbury clinched the most impressive number of green journeys in a countywide contest organised by the KM Charity Team. The competition was open to schools participating in the charity’s KM Walk to School campaign, which encourages families to adopt more active lifestyles.

As a reward, pupils enjoyed a special assembly with Ben giving a lively rendition of The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt - a funny tale of crayons going on strike because they’re bored of the way they’re being used.

The Kent actor was fresh from a mammoth run wowing thousands with his portrayal of Ugly Sister Donaldina in the Marlowe Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Along with regular stage appearances he has numerous film credits including Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, and last year’s British comedy, Patrick. Ben is also an honorary patron of the KM Charity Team.

Walk to school project officer Sarah Clyne said: “We are so lucky to have Ben’s support. He knows exactly how to make a story leap off the page and make the event a funny and exciting experience.”

She added: “It gives us great pleasure to reward those making an extra effort to walk to school and the children thoroughly enjoyed their treat.”

Last academic year the KM Walk to School campaign generated 617,320 green journeys during school-run hours. Super Wow (Walk on Wednesday) is the campaign’s flagship scheme and encourages pupils to opt for active travel to school. A series of inter-class and inter-school challenges offers prizes such as trophies, tickets to attractions, books, author visits and story time sessions.
