Enter cookery contest before next week’s deadline

There are just days left for young people to submit their entries to the county’s official school cooking competition - the deadline is midnight on Wednesday 6 November.

Young Cooks aims to boost confidence and creativity in the kitchen and encourage young people to develop skills that will assist healthier lifestyles.

Judges and organisers of the event are calling for schools to encourage students to try their hand at making a delicious and healthy dish for the competition before it’s too late.

Sarah Leipnik of Golding Homes, who is a member of the judging panel, described the competition as “a great project” she was proud to support.

She said: “We understand that a healthy balanced diet for our children is a big step towards wellbeing. Encouraging children, young people and families to get into the kitchen to create and cook healthy meals gives young people a fantastic lesson in preparing nutritious food.”

Entrants - who must be aged between six and 19 years - simply cook a meal and upload a photograph plus recipe details to the Young Cooks website.

The best entries for the Primary, Secondary, and Family categories will be invited to a MasterChef-style event at East Kent College where they will prepare their signature dishes for a judging panel in a bid to win a share of £500.

A child must be accompanied by an adult for the Family category and this can be a parent, guardian, Special Educational Needs Coordinator or Family Liaison Officer. Each young chef that makes it to the final will receive a goody bag of cooking-related prizes.

The overall Young Cooks champion will receive £200 while £150 will go to the Secondary School category winner, £100 to the Family winner, and the Primary School winner will take home £50.

Young Cooks is organised by the KM Charity Team, a children’s educational charity which provides services for schools to promote child health and wellbeing.

Entries must be received online by midnight on Wednesday 6 November at the Young Cooks website
