Final countdown for Bright Spark Awards entries

Schools have one last chance to showcase STEM projects and celebrate their science savvy students.

There is just one week left for Primary and Secondary schools to submit their nominations for the Bright Spark Awards - and give teams of budding young scientists a boost.

The contest calls for students to collaborate using cross-curricular skills in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM). It’s a great opportunity to show off work students may have prepared for schoolwork, science clubs, exams or other competitions.

To enter, complete a simple online form with a short description of the project’s aims, successes, challenges and lessons learned. If possible, include a photograph of the team with their project.

Following requests from schools, the deadline for entries to the Bright Spark Awards was extended to noon on Friday 14 June - but note this is a firm deadline and will not be extended further.

“We try to accommodate schools as much as possible but we can’t go beyond that date,” said the event’s coordinator Hannah Hawksworth of the KM Charity Team. “The judges need time to assess all the entries and then finalists are visited in school so that we can film their projects.”

The resulting videos are screened at an exciting Dragons’ Den-style final prior to teams taking to the stage to talk about their work and answer questions from the judging panel.

Judges will include representatives from Discovery Park, BAE Systems, Global Associates, Atkins Global, Megger, Pfizer, The ITL Group, Highways England, Kent Renewable Energy and Golding Vision.

A range of ‘money can’t buy’ experience prizes will be awarded to judges’ favourite projects while the overall champions will receive a limited edition trophy and £500.

Hannah added: “There really is no time to waste in getting students’ incredible inventions, investigations and innovations submitted. The competition final is not only a thrilling experience for the teams but also a wonderful way to celebrate their work and encourage them to pursue a STEM career.”

The Bright Spark Awards encourage entries from teams but individual students’ projects can also be submitted. Multiple projects can be entered and will be judged separately.
