ISSK Proficiency in English: Assessment Workshop
4 November 2016
Robust EAL assessments and an understanding of EAL pedagogy are essential if schools are to understand how to accelerate the progress of EAL learners and accurately record their proficiency in English.
As you are aware from October 2016 the DfE required schools to include details of their pupils’ English language proficiency in the School Census. As this was the first time this had been requested Schools were able to record ‘N - Not yet assessed’ in the Autumn Census.
In the Spring Census: 19 January 2017 schools will be expected to record accurate levels for all EAL students (except for those who joined the school close to census day or are not currently in regular attendance).
Robust EAL assessments and an understanding of EAL pedagogy are essential if schools are to understand how to accelerate the progress of EAL learners and accurately record their proficiency in English.
At the end of this training delegates will be able to:
- Assess the position of their EAL pupils against a five point scale of reading, writing and spoken language proficiency outlined by the DfE
- Confidently use a range of assessment tools to monitor and evaluate attainment of Minority Ethnic and EAL learners (focus on Kent Steps and NASSEA assessment)
- Set appropriate targets for individual EAL learners
- Identify effective strategies to enable learners to reach their targets.
Audience: SMT, EAL Leads and coordinators, SENCos
