Join in Buster’s Bake Off

A new competition for Primary and Secondary schools aims to find the region’s best young baker.

Schools have the chance to enthuse young people to knead, beat, fold, whip and sprinkle their way to the top thanks to Buster’s Bake Off.

The charity baking contest is open to Primary and Secondary schools which will each hold their own bake-off heats - and the winners could go through to a live final to compete for the champion’s trophy and other prizes.

Entrants will gather sponsorship money to bake a creation of their choosing, which can be sweet or savoury, such as cake, bread, pie or pizza. The event is organised by the KM Charity Team and sponsor money raised will support the charity’s literacy and road safety work with schools.

Heats can be staged on school premises or entrants can bake at home and bring in their entries to a nominated member of school staff. Schools will also select their winners and submit the details of winning dishes and cooks - complete with photographs - to the KM Charity Team and the information will be used to select competition finalists.

Heats should be staged prior to July 1 to allow time for the judging panel to assess entries and for invitations to the grand final to be issued before the summer holidays. The final will be staged in September to coincide with the Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off coverage on television when excitement about all things baking will be at an all-time high. Please note there is no link between the Channel 4 programme and the charity event Buster’s Bake Off.

Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, said: “The fantastic thing about baking is it’s something everyone can have a go at, because there is such a range of things you can make and so much room to be inventive. You don’t have to be an experienced cook to have a go at a Victoria sponge but young people who are confident have the scope to experiment with something quite adventurous, maybe making their own bread or delicious pie.”
