Kent Community Foundation

Kent Community Foundation, a grant-making charity, manages several funds which offer grants to individual children and young people from a financially disadvantaged background.

Over the last 12 months, Kent Community Foundation’s funding for individuals and families have made a total of 87 grants, coming to £62,042, which have supported the disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our local communities in a real and measurable way. A brief cross-section of these awards have paid for laptops to support young people struggling with academia; allowed disadvantaged children the opportunity to take part in day trips and residential they would have otherwise missed out on and paid for new uniform for young carers starting Secondary school.

Each of the funds in our Individuals and Families programme has its own specific criteria, which you can find on our website. If you have any questions about eligibility - or any other part of the funding process - please contact Joanne Brown on joanne@kentcf.org.uk or 01303 815 152.

Case Study: AD* is an only child whom carers for her mum who has been diagnosed with a long term medical condition that causes her chronic pain, along with extreme tiredness and depression. Her condition has meant mum has been unable to work and so the small family are living off a very low income and only just have enough money to get by. Due to her ongoing pain and tiredness mum relies on AD for a lot of support around the home - mainly for shopping, cooking and housework. As a result of their caring role, AD is struggling with anxiety and signs of depression and, after a yearlong wait is now receiving some support through child and adolescent mental health services.

AD really struggles to manage their emotions and says the only escape they have is music. AD can play the guitar a little but Mum cannot afford to buy a guitar for her child to learn fully. The grant awarded paid for a guitar, songbook and accessories and has given AD something positive to focus on and help to express their emotions.
