Library Cards for all Year 3 pupils

Information and Guidance for Schools to improve literacy levels.

You may have seen in the news recently that David Walliams and Education Secretary Nicky Morgan have announced a national mission to improve literacy levels of young children. This came after the publication of the DfE's 'Reading: The Next Steps' report.

This includes every eight year old school child in the country being enrolled in a local library. Kent Libraries are looking to implement this from October onwards. To find out how your school can enrol Year 3 pupils in Kent Libraries, follow the steps below.

Guidance for Schools

  1. Schools to contact their local library (see table below to locate your nearest library or call 03000 41 31 31)
  2. A member of library staff will email the joining form template to the school
  3. School sens these forms home for parental consent / signing
  4. School collects the forms in for the children who need library cards, and notes which children in their class done (because they already have a valid library card)
  5. School returns completed forms to their chosen library. Library cards will be ready in five working days
  6. Library staff will let the school know when the cards are ready to collect and give out to children
  7. Schools can arrange a free introductory visit to the library for each class, where children can borrow books (please remember to remind all children to bring their library cards with them).
