Magistrates in the Community (MIC)
12 June 2017
An opportunity to make young people aware of the workings of the Magistrates Court and how it can affect them.
The MIC programme is now in its 25th year. Since formation the programme has delivered talks to over 2 million UK citizens. Currently the programme covers an audience of around 200,000 p.a. of which 11,000 are in Kent.
MIC is a national programme sponsored by the Magistrates Association, a registered charity, which represents the interests of the magistracy. Working magistrates present to Primary and Secondary schools, and to further education units and adult community groups.
Where schools are concerned the thrust is to deter young people from becoming involved in the criminal justice system.
For Primary schools this is achieved through a presentation which typically includes a role play concerning a theft from an elderly lady. For Secondary schools the focus is currently on cyber-crime where, within a mock court, the students are presented with a case, asked to decide the verdict and to sentence the offender.
Events, for which there is no charge, are organised regionally by local coordinators who will be pleased to discuss school requirements and to tailor the talk to current needs.
The easiest way to make contact is to email the official MIC coordinator as detailed below:
