Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST)

Our Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) courses provide high quality professional development to those teaching or wanting to teach either GCSE mathematics at Secondary level or Core Mathematics to post-16 students.

The aims of the courses are to:

  • Enhance your mathematical knowledge to give you confidence to teach mathematics
  • Inspire your enthusiasm for mathematics
  • Provide you with motivating activities and tasks for teaching mathematics
  • Enhance your pedagogical skills in teaching mathematics.

The Secondary TSST course is focused on enhancing teaching of mathematics at GCSE and is suitable for numerate teachers wishing to teach more mathematics either at the Foundation or the Higher tier. Core Mathematics is a level 3 qualification and this course would suit teachers wishing to extend their knowledge and pedagogy beyond GCSE. Both courses welcome returners to teaching.

For state school teachers these courses are FREE, funded through the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and run in partnership with the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching (CIMT) at Plymouth University. All training days will be held at Canterbury Academy.

There will be five face-to-face sessions throughout the course of the year, supported by e-learning and online assessment and accreditation from CIMT at Plymouth University.

There will also be opportunities to register for two 30 credit Masters degree modules:

  • Teaching Mathematics through Problem Solving
  • Teaching Mathematics for understanding.

Start dates for the programmes are:

  • Secondary Mathematics, Monday 25 January 2018
  • Core mathematics, Wednesday 29 January 2018.
