National Union of Teachers (NUT) announce industrial action on Tuesday 5 July 2016

Actions for schools to take following the announcement of the NUT industrial action; along with resources and guidance for Headteachers and staff.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) have announced that they will be taking industrial action in the form of a one day strike on Tuesday 5 July 2016, in relation to increasing funding to schools and education, guaranteeing terms and conditions in all types of schools, and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workloads to be addressed.

You may have already been informed by individuals of their intention to take strike action, but please note that staff proposing to take strike action should be informed that as they will be in breach of contract they will have salary deducted on the basis of:

  • 1/5th of a week’s pay for every day of industrial action (pro rata for part days).
  • Or for teachers, 1/365th of a year’s salary (pro rata for part days), as set out in the Burgundy Book.

You will need to notify your Payroll provider so that salary deductions can be made as soon as possible after the industrial action and also inform your Area Education Officer, by e-mail, of the numbers of staff taking industrial action.

If you buy KCC Schools Personnel services you will receive information from them as to how to inform them of employees taking industrial action who are in the pension scheme.

You are encouraged to keep schools open to try to maintain continuity of educational provision, taking into account health and safety requirements, but if you think that as a result of the industrial action you may need to close or partially close the school you must consult your Area Education Officer before making the decision to do so.
