Outdoor Learning in Canterbury

Environmental education activities in the Westgate Gardens.

Set in the beautiful Westgate Gardens our ‘Wild about Westgate’ programme enriches the National Curriculum by bringing learning outcomes to life through hands on practical activities. The ‘Wildlife Olympics’ programme integrates Key Stage 1 and 2 science and physical education objectives. Learn about life processes, adaptations and feeding relationships through nature themed green games. Children can take part in the minibeast marathon and food chain challenge which combine team fun, exercise and learning.

Situated next to the Westgate Towers, the Westgate Parks are rich in heritage and wildlife. Children can discover the hidden life of the River Great Stour by dipping for creatures and identifying them through a game of bingo. Key Stage 2 groups will learn how some of the clever creatures are adapted to live in their watery world.

Other programmes include:

  • The Great Stour River study
  • Minibeast safari
  • Iron Age Homes and Roman hotels
  • Geocaching
  • Forest School.

New for 2017, you can hire a room in the Westgate Towers or part of a converted church, all within a stone’s throw of the beautiful Westgate Parks.
