Schools have green light to enter eco awards - but only until Sunday

Deadline to nominate environmental initiatives large or small for the Green School Awards is this Sunday, December 10.

Schools who are excellent at energy-saving, great at gardening, or naturals at nature conservation have just days left to get their great work recognised in the Green School Awards 2018.

The KM Charity Team in partnership with Golding Homes have organised the awards to celebrate schools’ environmental achievements - from initiatives teaching pupils about nature or recycling all the way through to encouraging families to walk to school.

The deadline for nominations is midnight on Sunday, December 10 and anyone from the school can submit an entry, including teachers, staff, governors, parents, and volunteers.

Winning schools will receive a trophy and framed certificate, and details of their work will be featured in a best practice brochure sent to every school in the county. They will also be able to display the Green School Awards logo as a mark of excellence on the school website, in brochures, newsletters, and elsewhere within the school.

Previous winners have included a much-loved lollipop lady who kept generations of children safe in her 30-year tenure; a beekeeping club; outdoor lessons to help pupils learn about nature; and an initiative involving pupils growing and selling produce to raise money for children in poverty in India.

Winners will be chosen for each district in the county in the following four categories: green travel to school and road safety, energy conservation, nature conservation, and recycling. They will be invited to receive their awards at a ceremony at Kent Cricket Club in Canterbury in February.

KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby said: “If your school hasn’t entered yet then please come forward! We are always really impressed with the standard of nominations and sometimes you just read things that make you say ‘Wow, how did they think of that?’”

He continued: “But equally, these awards are about rewarding simple efforts that make a difference to the community. At one school, pupils collected huge amounts of litter which had been dropped in nearby woodland and took it back to school to recycle it. That is such a straightforward thing to do, but it is transformative for everyone who visits that woodland and an important lesson in our impact on the environment. So don’t be shy - let’s get your school the recognition it deserves!”
