Schools honoured for child literacy success

Triumphant schools have been awarded Literacy Marks for developing pupils’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Literacy Marks were presented at gold or platinum level to recognise schools successfully exciting young readers through Buster’s Book Club.

Pupils have responded with gusto to the reading reward scheme, which inspires children to spend more time reading for pleasure at home with their families.

Winning schools received their accolades at a ceremony organised by the KM Charity Team at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel.

“It’s so much more than the time spent curled up with a good book,” said Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team. “Pupils with a love of reading are engaging their imaginations, gaining a larger vocabulary, and developing the ability to express themselves - all key skills that will help them enormously in all areas of their school work, personal life, and future careers.”

Schools receiving platinum level Literacy Marks included Luddenham School in Faversham; St Edward's Catholic Primary in Sheerness; Maidstone schools Kingswood Primary, Tiger Primary, and St Francis Catholic Primary; Shears Green Infant School in Northfleet; Reculver CEP School in Herne Bay; and Bridge and Patrixbourne CEP School and Spires Academy, both in Canterbury.

Buster’s Book Club works by setting pupils an individual home reading target based on age group. Participating children complete a series of reading challenges throughout the year culminating in an annual record attempt.

Classes encourage each other to meet their reading targets in a bid to win the Reading Class of the Week Trophy and other prizes such as tickets to leisure attractions, books, and storyteller visits.

Buster’s Book Club runs from January to December each year. Schools registering for the reading reward scheme by December 1 will go into a prize draw to win 400 books.
