Science competition deadline extended

The deadline for the Bright Spark Awards has been extended to 14 June, giving schools more time to submit entries highlighting students’ exciting work.

The contest offers a great opportunity to show off work students may have prepared for schoolwork, science clubs, exams or other competitions. Prizes include £500 for the overall winners, as well as money-can’t-buy experience days with the competition’s judging organisations.

The Bright Spark Awards encourage teams of Primary or Secondary school students to use cross-curricular skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects in practical projects.

Competition categories of invention, investigation and innovation allow for a wide range of projects to be submitted. Entries already received for this year include a solar-power renewable energy project and a prototype for a forest-fire early-warning system.

The judging panel includes technology and engineering firm Global Associates, who are keen to stress that the contest is not just for young people who might be identified as science prodigies.

Global Associates design engineer Gary Smith said: “We think the competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore innovative, creative ways to get into STEM subjects. It’s particularly important to us because we’re an engineering company.”

He added: “We recognise and we see that there’s a skills gap in the future of engineering, and we want students to unlock any potential that maybe they didn’t even realise they had.”

The best contenders will be visited in school to be filmed talking about their project and later battle it out at a Dragons’ Den-style final, where they will present their work and answer questions from the judges.

Organised by the KM Charity Team, the Bright Spark Awards encourage entries from teams, although individual students can submit their own projects. Multiple projects can be entered and will be judged separately.

To enter, complete a simple online form giving details of the project by the new deadline of Friday 14 June. Find out more at the Bright Sparks Awards website
