Special School Review consultation

On Wednesday 19 June the Special School Review public consultation went live.

Thank you and well done to the consultation team at KCC who have worked diligently to ensure that the consultation was completed in good time and with the highest standards of governance. The link to the consultation is below. We would encourage all schools to engage with the consultation and consider responses.

School representatives will be invited to dedicated engagement events and Pupil Voice Workshops have been scheduled to ensure that the voices of children and young people with SEN are heard and valued during the consultation process. There is also a series of online parental engagement forums which we encourage schools to share with their local communities so that parent and carers can book onto a convenient session through the consultation webpage:

  • Wednesday 26 June - 11am to 12:30pm
  • Wednesday 10 July - 4pm to 5:30pm
  • Tuesday 16 July - 5pm to 6:30pm
  • Monday 22 July - 5:30pm to 7pm

You will be aware that in May 2024 the Special School Review was presented at CYPE Cabinet Committee alongside the Localities Model and Specialist Resource Provision Review, together proposing a strategic approach to change. Over the last few weeks this has been built on by the series of workshops in relation to the “Continuum of Needs and Provision” attended by KCC officers, school leaders and staff. The six workshops were very well attended and have provided much thoughtful discussion on how enhancing outcomes for children and young people with SEN can be improved through collaborative professionalism across the sector. It was a pleasure to engage with mainstream schools, SRPs and special schools to discuss the challenges and successes being experienced. The information captured from these discussions will be incorporated into the broader ongoing SEND transformation work.

The consultation process will close on Wednesday 31 July 2024 and following subsequent analysis, next steps will be developed and shared.
