Supply Teachers Direct

A new scheme has been launched with the aim of providing a solution to the present situation of schools expending disproportionate amounts on supply teaching agencies.

The Supply Teachers Direct register has been set up to provide an alternative to this arrangement. An agency will typically charge a school a day fee of £180, (in some instances £280 for cover at short notice) however the teacher only receives £90 - £120. Heads have little or no control over the quality of teachers entering their classrooms and an extra burden is placed upon administrative staff in dealing with time-consuming phone calls.

Supply Teachers Direct has interviewed and strictly vetted a large bank of teachers in adherence with Kent Safeguarding Children Board, Safer Recruitment and Employment Practice Guidance. These teachers are available for teaching assignments in Kent. Their details are logged onto a secure database. Schools who join the scheme have full access to this register and are able to independently view the details of all teachers who are available for work over a specific period.

Each teacher has a personal profile which includes their photograph, C.V, a short biography, their DBS registration number and availability calendar. When a school needs a teacher they simply log on and search for one based on the criteria of their needs - availability, location, Key Stage, subject specialism. The details of all teachers who fit these criteria are immediately available to the school.

The school sends a booking request directly to the teacher of their choice and receive an instantaneous response directly from them. The service is available 24/7. If they wish the school can carry out additional checks by inputting their DBS number and DOB into the DBS online checking service - this instantaneously notifies them of the status of their DBS.

The scheme was launched this autumn and has had wide coverage in countywide media, including Kent Online

The initiative has been funded by successfully securing an £8,000 SBB loan from Kent County Council. In order to do so it was necessary to evidence adherence to Kent Safeguarding procedures.
