The acid test to find Kent’s top science teachers

Schools have just two weeks left to nominate colleagues with chemistry in the classroom for the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards

Educators inspiring the next generation of science and technology pioneers will be rewarded at the county wide annual event.

Key partners of the awards, including senior figures at the University of Kent, Kreston Reeves and Loop CR Ltd, are calling for nominations for top science, maths and IT teachers.

Bob Green, senior lecturer of the university’s School of Physical Sciences, is championing the physics, chemistry and forensic science categories.

“With forensic science it’s important to promote this because it can catalyse pupils’ interest in science,” he said.

The School is once again offering an action packed ‘CSI day’ for the winning physical sciences teacher and his or her class. Last year’s prize included a hands-on ballistics session using high powered air rifles in the labs as well as the chance to learn crime scene techniques.

Phil Reynolds of Kreston Reeves, backing the maths category, said: “Accountancy and maths go hand in hand – it’s a fantastic subject – and accountancy is a great career.”

Richard Langshaw of LoopCR Ltd is supporting the IT category because of the good work teachers and support staff are doing.

“This is our way of giving something back so they can continue to develop IT within the schools,” he said.

Award categories include standard curriculum subjects as well as primary school teacher, secondary school teacher, NQT, non-teaching member of staff, volunteer and team. Around 50 winning individuals and schools will be honoured at a celebratory awards dinner staged at Leeds Castle in May.

There is no limit to the number of nominations that can be submitted at the Kent Teacher of the Year website by the deadline of March 1.
