Time is running out to join in Buster’s Bake Off

Primary and Secondary schools have until 1 July to stage heats and submit their best young bakers for exciting new contest.

Schools have the chance to enthuse young people to knead, beat, fold, whip and sprinkle their way to the top thanks to Buster’s Bake Off.

The charity baking contest is open to Primary and Secondary schools which will each hold their own bake-off heats - and the winners could go through to a live final to compete for the champion’s trophy and other prizes.

Great British Bake Off star Jane Beedle will be on the judging panel at the grand final to help select the overall champion. Jane was a finalist on series seven of the BBC’s hit baking programme in 2016 along with Andrew Smyth and Candice Brown, the latter of whom ultimately won the series.

Fans of the show will remember how Jane dazzled in the technical challenges and wowed judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with her mirror glazed cake.

Buster’s Bake Off challenges young bakers to raise sponsorship to make a sweet or savoury taste sensation. The event is supported by Principals by CH and CO and run by educational charity the KM Charity Team to fundraise for its green travel and literacy work with schools.

Funds will go towards the walk to school initiative Walk on Wednesday and reading-reward scheme Buster’s Book Club, which gets even the most reluctant readers excited about achieving home-reading targets.

Buster's Bake Off heats can be staged on school premises or entrants can bake at home and bring in their entries to a nominated member of school staff. Schools will also select their winners and submit the details of winning dishes and cooks - complete with photographs - to the KM Charity Team and this information will be used to select competition finalists.

Heats should be staged by 1 July to allow time for the Buster’s Bake Off judging panel to assess entries and for invitations to the grand final to be issued before the summer holidays.

The final will be staged in September to coincide with Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off coverage on television when excitement about all things baking will be at an all-time high.

Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, said: “The fantastic thing about baking is it’s something everyone can have a go at, because there is such a range of things you can make and so much room to be inventive.”

He added: “You don’t have to be an experienced cook to have a go at a Victoria sponge, but young people who are confident have the scope to experiment with something quite adventurous, maybe making their own bread or delicious pie.”
