Walk away with an award

Top walk-to-school schemes will be among the projects honoured at the Green School Awards 2020 which are now open for entry.

Organised by the KM Charity Team, the Green School Awards give eco-friendly Primary and Secondary schools the chance to shine.

A number of awards will be presented to schools successfully operating walking bus services or walk-to-school programmes. Even a much-loved school crossing patrol officer could gain recognition as a big thank you for keeping children safe, whatever the weather.

Anyone from the school can submit a nomination - teaching and support staff, volunteers and parents - but the deadline to complete the online form is Sunday 1 December.

A panel of judges will assess the best school-led activities in the following categories:

  • green travel to school and road safety
  • energy and nature conservation
  • clean air
  • recycling
  • health and wellbeing.

Organisations on the panel include Loop CR, Ethical Earth Company, East Kent Recycling, Golding Vision, NCS Technology, and Streetspace Urban Structures.

District winners will receive certificates to display as well as a special Green School Awards Winner logo to trumpet their green credentials. Limited edition glass trophies will be awarded to overall champions.

Details of winning projects and schemes will be collated in a best practice brochure available for free download to encourage others to follow their lead.

The event’s coordinator, Karen Brinkman, said: “It’s never been more important to consider our impact on the environment and we know that a great many schools are setting fantastic examples.”

She added: “There are a huge variety of activities from walking buses to gardening clubs, awareness days to homework projects - all of which teach pupils valuable lessons and empower them to make a difference.”

Winning schools will be presented with their accolades in February at a ceremony staged at the Ashford International Hotel.
