Walk to school champs will be seeing stars

Schools signing up this term for Super Wow have the chance to win storytelling visits by stars including a children’s author and two CBeebies TV presenters.

Sign-ups for the fun walk to school scheme Super Wow (Walk on Wednesday) are being accepted right up until the last day of term at a 20% discount on the usual price. Organisers of the scheme have extended the deadline to encourage schools to have green travel in place for next academic year, allowing them to take part in a slew of exciting competitions.

Super Wow schools will be eligible to join in inter-school green travel challenges to win a story time visit from celebrities including award-winning children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth. This autumn, one lucky school will get to experience the storytelling magic of the creator of the popular Percy the Park Keeper and Q Pootle 5 series.

Other storytellers due to visit winning schools next academic year include CBeebies duo Phil Gallagher of Mister Maker plus Joanna Adeyinka-Burford from The Let’s Go Club. Only last week, Joanna gave a story time to challenge winners Seal Class at Gravel Hill Primary School where she read The Queen’s Knickers by Nicholas Allan.

The Super Wow scheme requires pupils to walk, cycle, or scooter to school at least once a week and preferably on a Wednesday. Pupils living long distances from their school can still join in by using the option to park and stride. Each week, participating schools honour their best class with a Green Class of the Week trophy, and regular inter-school challenges offer major prizes for having bumper or most improved green travel numbers on the set competition dates.

Simon Dolby of the KM Charity Team, which runs Super Wow, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be in a position to offer such exciting rewards to our top schools. I’m happy to reveal there are even more competitions scheduled to take place over the next academic year with fantastic prizes to motivate and reward pupils, so watch this space!”

Schools can use their Primary School Sport Premium grant to fund Super Wow which includes tried and tested incentives for the children and self-evaluation evidence for Ofsted. In addition, the scheme benefits from media coverage via the KM Group’s newspapers, website Kent Online and radio station kmfm.

As part of the package, schools will receive two additional schemes: Green Champions, where children take an active role in promoting green travel, and Road Safety Skill Tests to help children become safer pedestrians.
